The United States Embassy in Nigeria has issued a security advisory urging American citizens to avoid central areas of Abuja on Monday due to a planned protest demanding the release of detained Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) leader, Nnamdi Kanu.

In a notice released Friday, the embassy flagged potential disruptions around Eagle Square and the Central Business District, warning of possible roadblocks, traffic congestion, and clashes between demonstrators and security forces. “There may be confrontations between police and protesters that could turn violent,” the alert stated, recommending limited movement, avoidance of large crowds, and keeping children home from school. U.S. nationals were also advised to carry identification, review personal security plans, and vary daily routines.

The protest, organized by activist and Sahara Reporters publisher Omoyele Sowore, is part of a broader campaign spotlighting Kanu’s continued detention since his controversial 2021 rendition from Kenya. Kanu faces treason charges, which he denies, arguing that his arrest violated international law. Supporters view the rally as a call for justice, while Nigerian authorities maintain that the case is a matter of national security.

The Federal High Court in Abuja is set to resume Kanu’s trial next week, following a medical panel’s recent assessment deeming him fit to proceed despite health concerns raised by his legal team.

The embassy’s advisory echoes a similar alert issued in June, which restricted staff from visiting military installations amid global tensions. However, it confirmed that consular services will remain operational and noted that previous protests have not resulted in reported injuries or incidents.

As political and legal tensions surrounding Kanu’s case persist, Monday’s demonstration is expected to draw significant attention—and heightened security presence—in Nigeria’s capital.
